Brentwood Guerilla Gardeners Successful
We are all striving to make the most of our limited resources in Brentwood and the growing of fruit, vegetables and possibly flowers are very attractive to garden owners around the country. However many gardeners or groups of gardeners find they are limited by the small patch of land they have and on this land this is often a garden shed taking up some growing room, although the shed is essential for storing their garden tools away to keep them dry and secure. When we see land which is not being used or neglected it can be frustrating and many people or groups of people are taking action by occupying these pieces of land and creating a garden to provide a source of food which benefits them financially and fitness wise. This can be taken to extremes with the installation of garden sheds which means that their tools can be left on-site rather than having to take them with them each time they go down to this garden.
These people whilst not eco-warriors – a word which is bandied about – but are known as guerilla gardeners. Like their counterparts in war zones then aim to survive on the land and secretly and these do this by occupying land where they are not likely to be noticed. Whether it is land off the beaten track or where no one has been seen for a long time. There are implications to the land owners because if anyone occupies your land for a certain amount of time, which I think is 12 years, then these guerillas can claim the land legally. Their case would be even stronger if they have established a shed or sheds on the Brentwood land as this could be constituted a structure.
However, a group of guerilla gardeners in Midlothian have successfully tended a plot of land for over 6 months for the benefit of the community. The Edinburgh Community Gardening Activists project was a patch of garden in Prestonpans which was a neglected patch of derelict land and they have managed to transform this into a thriving garden. The piece of land which they converted into a garden was known locally as ‘The Banana’ due to the crescent shape of the land and is situated in Marchmont Crescent in Edinburgh’s old town.
Lucy Ann Wiltshire, a guerilla gardener with the action group, said that they take a patch of land and totally transform it for the good of the neighbourhood and their own reward is the satisfaction of a job well done. They don’t erect any sheds on the plot which means they take their garden tools with them when they go to work in the garden. She went on to say that some people say it is the responsibility of the owners to keep this land tidy and presentable but if they conscript this land for community use they become the owners and need to look after these gardens.
A little earlier a group of guerilla gardeners were evicted from some Network Rail land which they had converted into usable gardens. They have been growing vegetables on the plot but did not want to pay the rent Network Rail was demanding. A shed had to be removed along with the vegetables on site. Maybe Brentwood may be in their sights in the coming year – who knows?
Start of Garden Sheds Site
At long last we have added a Blog to our website https://www.leisurebuildings.com/ which feature all our range of garden sheds and buildings. It is a surprise that it has taken so long as we were the very first website in the UK to feature sheds back in 1996. At the time I was running Titan Garden Sheds which I have started back in 1979 making garden sheds and selling direct to the Brentwood public. At the time the advertising was done through local newspapers, mainly in the classified sections. Occasionally we had a small display advert but being a very small company back in those days was not very often. One of the best magazines we used for the ‘Thames Valley Trader’ based in Reading Berks, not that far from our small factory in Surrey. The Thames Valley Trader evolved in the Auto Trader specialising in motor vehicles of all sorts, and like us followed us onto the internet. We also used the Exchange and Mart as a regular spot for advertising. It was my son, Craig Robin, who introduced my garden shed company, which grew into our family firm, onto the internet back in 1996.
My shed company at the time was Titan Garden Buildings, which we still offered for many years afterwards. He saw the internet in its very early stages and realised it would be a good media to let the public know about the range of sheds which we had been making since 1979. One Saturday back in 1996 when my wife and I were going shopping in Woking he asked whether I could get a book on creating a web site which we did. I think this book was by Puffin and it consisted of about 100 pages. However from that book Craig wrote the web pages which would become the foundations for our current web site https://www.leisurebuildings.com/ which you see today and is used by 1000’s every day.
At the time I was not very convinced about the possible potential of the internet, having gone through the phase with CB (citizen band) radios back in the late 70’s early 80’s. The CB’s was a mad faze which everyone in Brentwood (so it seemed at the time) wanted to be part of. The problem was that is was illegal to operate the CB radios in the early days, however, the government of the day, in 1981 legalised the use of these radios so everybody could use them. For some reason after being made legal they slowly died a death and the faze ended. I thought this would happen on the web – how wrong could I be !!!.
Since those days I have evolved into a great believer on the internet and use it on a daily basis for anything and everything – how did we manage before? We intend to offer a regular blog relating to our company, to garden sheds, also gardening features and helpful advice, so just sign up to be informed when this will happen. We also have a How To Guides relating to garden buildings and related subjects so take a look.
