Scouts in Nottingham have shown their green credentials as well as how good their inspirations in eco-friendliness are by helping to develop a church garden
in Nottingham. After gathering 40,000 aluminium cans, which were recycled over four years, funds were raised which helped to restore St John’s Church garden at Church Oak in the midlands county of Nottinghamshire.
The Evening Post reported that children from as young as six were involved and helped to plant bulbs, flowers and other similar schemes. Keith Wright, the Scout leader said that the garden was a total disaster area over run with nettles and weeds growing up to 6 feet tall. These obviously were not seen as flowers waiting to be discovered as the area was more or less unusable.
Mr Wright, took a look at it and could see the possibilities to convert this into a wildlife area, so could use what was there and add a little control to the proceedings. An area for butterflies, which nowadays seemed to be dying out, was added and it just grew (literally) from there he told the newspaper.
The 40,000 aluminium cans raised £300 and this was invested on garden bulbs and furniture. Whether a 7X5 garden shed was considered as part of the future was not clear but it must be said that it is good that youngsters, so often getting a bad press, have proved there is a lot of good and creativity in them. They also can appreciate that we have to look after our planet and our rapidly depleting natural resources. It’s not clear where the cans were stored whilst they were collecting them but I would guess that one or two garden sheds could be filled by them.
The Scouting movement is a fantastic organisation which enables young people to explore their limits and capabilities and also how to work with other members of society. It extends over 216 countries around the world where 28 million young people enjoy the inspiration stated by Lord Baden Powell.
Further away in Bath in the South West a school have launched a sensory garden by having a tea party, also hoping to raise funds to improve their local area it was reported by the Bath Chronicle.
